I got saved while in Japan in 1985. My first introduction to the Bible was through a friend of mine Scott Campbell. I remember being at the lowest point in my life and while on a late night walk along the pathway surrounding Kami-Seya Naval base, I looked to the heavens and said, “I can’t do it alone, I need your help”. I didn’t know why I said that but, in the days to follow, my life began to change. God’s first words to me were, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his pathways” (Mark 1:3) which was John’s message. I got actively involved in a small group fellowship at Atsugi Naval base.
On New Year’s Eve service 1985, the preacher asked everyone to make one request of God for 1986. I asked him for a wife and to start a family. I asked him about it again in late January. His word to me was, “you are going to get married, fear not”. I must tell you, I had no idea who the woman would be as hadn’t been dating anybody. I received a letter sometime between early February and late march of 86 from a family friend asking me to get her a kimono. I had no earthly idea that this woman, Janine, would be the wife God would chose for me. When I got back home from Japan in early April, I remember laying in bed and then I heard the voice of God speak in a very loud voice, “You are going to marry Janine and you will have a son and you will call him Joshua”. The voice was so loud that I felt like I was being pushed into the mattress. Janine and I got married mothers day weekend 1986 just before I was due to leave for my duty station in Adak, AK. We have been happily married for 33 years this coming May.
